OS2 Singlemode Patch Cords FAQ
OS2 single-mode fiber is a single-mode fiber that complies with ITU-T G.652C/D and G.657A1 standards, and is also known as “low-water-peak fiber” or “zero-water-peak fiber”. With a core diameter of 8.6-9 μm and a loose tube design, it supports long-haul, high-rate data transmission and is bend-resistant, making it suitable for deployment in complex environments.
Low attenuation value: Maximum attenuation value is 0.4dB/km (1310nm and 1550nm bands), which is much lower than OS1's 1.0dB/km.
Long Transmission Distance: Supports transmission up to 200km (theoretical value), and is often used in practical applications for 150m transmission of 40G/100G Ethernet.
Wide Band Support: Eliminates the effect of 1383nm water peaks, extends the available bands to O, E, S, and C bands (1325-1560nm), and supports wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM).
Bend-resistant design: G.657A1 compliant, suitable for high-density cabling and complex environments.
Long distance communication: Wide Area Network (WAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), Long distance backhaul network.
High-speed networks: Support 40G/100G/400G Ethernet transmission, especially for data center core layer and high-performance computing (HPC).
Complex environment: outdoor deployment, factory wiring and other scenarios that require tensile and flexural resistance.

The following factors need to be considered comprehensively:
Connector type: choose LC, SC or MTP/MPO (high density scenario) according to the device interface.
Transmission rate: Support 40G/100G with multi-core patch cords (e.g. MTP-12 core).
Environmental requirements: outdoor deployment of loose tube structure, data centers can choose low-smoke non-halogen (LSZH) jacket.
Bending radius: Minimum bending radius ≥ 10 times the cable diameter (e.g. 3mm cable needs to be ≥ 30mm).
Endface Cleaning: Clean the connector endface regularly to avoid signal loss due to dust.
Compatibility: When mixing with OS1 devices, the performance is based on OS1.
OS2 price is higher than OS1 (about 20-40% higher), but lower than OM4 multimode fiber.
Not in the short term, OS2 supports 400G/800G Ethernet (via parallel fiber technology) and is still the main choice for long-haul, high-speed transmission at a lower cost than OM5 fiber. However, for ultra-long haul (e.g. 1000G+) or wider wavelength multiplexing (SWDM), OM5 can be considered.
