OM4 Multimode Duplex Patch Cords FAQ

1: What is OM4 Multimode Dual Core Fiber Optic Patchcord?

OM4 Multimode Dual Core Fiber Optic Patchcord is a high performance fiber optic patchcord with 50/125μm laser optimized multimode fiber (OM4), designed for short distance and high speed data transmission. The dual-core structure supports bi-directional signal transmission and is often equipped with high-density connectors such as LC, SC, MTP/MPO, etc. It is suitable for high-bandwidth and low-latency scenarios.

2: What are the main application scenarios of OM4 multimode dual-core patch cable?

It is widely used in:

High-speed data centers (40G/100G/200G/400G Ethernet)

     Cloud computing and virtualized networks

High performance computing (HPC) and storage area networks (SAN)

Enterprise core networks and high-density cabling environments

3: What is the transmission performance of OM4 fiber?

Bandwidth: 4700MHz-km at 850nm wavelength (far exceeds OM3's 2000MHz-km).

Transmission distance (based on multimode fiber standards):

10G Ethernet: up to 550 meters

40G/100G Ethernet: up to 150 meters

200G/400G Ethernet (if using parallel fiber technology): up to 100-150 meters

4: What is the difference between OM4 and OM3, OM5 fiber optic patch cords?

Performance: OM4 is better than OM3 in terms of bandwidth and distance (e.g. 40G/100G distance is 150 meters instead of 100 meters in OM3), but weaker than OM5 (supports longer SWDM wavelength extension).

Cost: The OM4 is more expensive than the OM3 but less expensive than the OM5, making it ideal for balancing performance and budget.

Compatibility: OM4 is compatible with OM3 devices, but be aware that performance is based on the lowest grade of fiber in mixed use.

5: Why choose OM4 over OM3?

OM4 is recommended if you need to fulfill the following requirements:

Possible future upgrades to 40G/100G or even 400G networks.

Need longer distance for high-speed transmission (e.g. 150 meters for 40G/100G).

Wish to extend the network life cycle and reduce the cost of upgrading at a later stage.

6: Does OM4 patch cable support 400G Ethernet?

Supported! With multi-core parallel transmission (e.g. using MTP/MPO-12 or MTP/MPO-24 connectors), OM4 can support short distance (70-100 meters) transmission solutions such as 400G-SR4.2/800G-SR8.

7: How to choose the right OM4 dual core patch cable?

Need to pay attention to the following parameters:

Connector type: LC duplex (high versatility), MTP/MPO (high density and high speed scenarios).

Sheath material: Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) is recommended for data centers, PVC is optional for general environment.

Polishing type: APC (low reflection) or UPC (universal), choose according to the interface requirements.

8: Can OM4 patch cords be mixed with OM3 devices?

Physical interfaces are compatible (e.g. LC or MTP), but system performance is limited to lower grade fibers when mixed (e.g. OM4 mixed with OM3, overall performance is based on OM3).

9: What do I need to pay attention to when using OM4 patch cords?

Minimum bending radius: ≥ 10 times the diameter of the patch cord (e.g. cable diameter 3mm, the bending radius needs to be ≥ 30mm).

End face cleaning: Use professional cleaning tools for regular maintenance to avoid signal loss.

Avoid excessive stretching: double-core structure requires careful operation to prevent fiber damage.
