OM3 Multimode Duplex Patch Cords FAQ
OM3 Multimode Dual Core Fiber Optic Patchcord is a high-performance fiber optic patchcord that uses 50/125μm laser-optimized multimode fiber (OM3) to support short-distance, high-speed data transmission. The dual-core structure allows for simultaneous transmission of bi-directional signals and is usually equipped with high density connectors such as LC, SC, MTP/MPO.
It is widely used in high-speed data centers, enterprise networks, cloud computing, high-performance computing (HPC) and scenarios requiring 10G/40G/100G Ethernet transmission, especially suitable for short-distance, high-bandwidth demand environment.
Bandwidth: 2000MHz-km at 850nm (much higher than OM2's 500MHz-km).
Transmission distance (based on 10Gbps rate): 10G Ethernet: up to 300 meters; 40G/100G Ethernet (if using MTP connectors): up to 100 meters
Fiber Type: OM3 uses 50/125μm laser-optimized fiber, OM2 is 62.5/125μm, and OM4 is higher performance 50/125μm.
Performance: OM3 is better than OM2 in terms of bandwidth and transmission distance, but weaker than OM4 (OM4 supports 40G/100G transmission up to 150 meters).
Cost: OM3 is more economical than OM4 and slightly more cost effective than OM2.
OM3 fiber is laser-optimized and designed to support VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) light source, which can effectively reduce mode dispersion and improve transmission efficiency in the 850nm window to meet the demand for high bandwidth such as 10G/40G/100G.
The following factors need to be considered:
Connector type: Select LC duplex, MTP/MPO, etc. according to the device interface.
Transmission rate: If you need to support 40G/100G, it is recommended to choose MTP multi-core patch cords.
Length: Select according to the actual wiring distance to avoid excessive length leading to signal attenuation.
Sheath Material: Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) is available for data center, PVC is available for general environment.
The physical interface is compatible (such as LC, SC and other common connectors), but mixed use will be limited by the transmission capacity of the lower performance fiber (such as OM3 and OM2 mixed use, the overall performance of OM2 shall prevail).
Bending radius: The minimum bending radius is recommended to be ≥ 10 times the diameter of the patch cord, avoid sharp bends.
End face cleaning: Clean the connector end face regularly to prevent dust from causing signal loss.
Avoid overstretching: Double-core structure needs to be held lightly to prevent fiber breakage.
